(2020 - 2024) Supervisor of Doctorate candidate Paloma Resende in the Ecology and Conservation Biology program at UESC. In southern Bahia, cocoa agroforests form a mosaic that provides the ideal model to understand how medium and large mammals respond to different vegetation management techniques. Identifying which and how many species inhabit these places can indicate their minimum survival requirements, as well as the importance of these environments for conservation. Thus, the objective of this study was to inventory the composition and richness of the community of medium and large mammals in cocoa agroforests, in three landscapes with different levels of forest cover and land use in southern Bahia.
(2020 - 2024) Supervisor of Doctorate candidate Leticia Braga da Silva in the Ecology and Conservation Biology program at UESC. Despite being one of the main biodiversity hotspots, the Atlantic Forest is affected by an old and continuous process of deforestation and has a way of maintaining local biodiversity in agroforestry. My research project seeks to understand which environmental characteristics affect the use and occurrence of primates in cocoa agroforestry in southern Bahia. In addition, I also try to find out whether the forest cover and the matrix of this agroforestry influence the consumption of cocoa by the remaining local fauna.
(2020 - 2024) Co-supervisor of Ph.D. candidate Alaya Keane in the Ecology and Conservation Biology program at Texas A&M University, USA. The Ph.D. proesct is entitle "Understanding the Conservation Value of Brazilian Agroforestry using a threatened primate, Callithrix kuhlii, in Bahia, Brazil". There are five main objectives for the project to assess if cabrucas are adequate habitats for an arboreal primate: 1) to document abundance of C. kuhlii in cabruca systems; 2) to record the breadth of resources utilized for C. kuhlii; 3) to document the accounts of “gouging” behavior to extract gums and exudates; 4) to identify variables that define suitable habitat for the marmosets within cabrucas, and 5) to engage with the local communities to share knowledge products to enhance the conservation value of the cabruca systems and inform management decisions.
(2021 - 2023) Supervisor of master student Ana Rubia S. Rossi in the Ecology and Conservation Biology program at UESC. The south of Bahia has the largest remnants of Atlantic Forest in the state and has the important presence of Cabrucas to connect and enable the displacement of fauna between natural fragments, helping to maintain the local biodiversity. However, such a landscape mosaic is impacted by the presence of roads, which affect biodiversity in different ways, acting as a filter. This study aims to analyze the composition of mammals in the gradient of distance from the edge of the road and the richness and abundance of roadkill, seeking to relate it to traffic and landscape characteristics in an agroforestry matrix.
(2022 - 2024) Supervisor of master student Maria L. Ventorin in the Ecology and Conservation Biology program at UESC. Loss and modification of habitats are one of the main threats to bat biodiversity, which can lead to extinctions or changes in patterns of species richness and diversity and consequently loss of environmental services provided by them. In this context, bats (Chiroptera) are important controllers of insects and agricultural pests. Within this context, the present project proposes to sample through bioacoustics the fauna of aerial insectivorous bats in 3 landscapes with different percentages of forest and agricultural crops in southern Bahia. Thus, we intend to assess whether: 1) agricultural crops have differences in taxonomic and functional diversities of aerial insectivorous bats; 2) if the landscape characteristics (percentage of forest, proximity to urban areas, among others) influence the taxonomic and functional diversity of aerial insectivorous bats in each region, and if 3) the reduction of environmental complexity influences the use of environments by bats aerial insectivores.
(2022 -2023) Supervisor of Ana Carolina Vaz Ferreira Undergrad in Biological Sciences at UESC. My undergrad project is entitle "Small mammals (Rodentia and Didelphidae) running over rate on highway BA-262". We intend to determine which group of small mammals (Rodents or marsupials) are more susceptible to being run over on the BA-262 – Ilhéus – Uruçuca highway. The study will be carried out on a 37 km stretch of the BA-262 highway (Ilhéus – Uruçuca). Revisions will be made through transects on the BA-262 highway (walking along the highway) in order to recognize and account for the small mammals (Rodents or marsupials) run over. Small mammals run over will be taxonomically identified and photographed individually for a second check of the species and/or group they belong to. Each animal run over will be registered locally through the geographic coordinate. Weather characteristics (sun, rain, cloudy, etc.) will also be noted, in addition to collecting the flow of vehicles on the highway through trap cameras.
(2022 -2023) Supervisor of Aline Sandes Dórea Undergrad in Biological Sciences at UESC. My undergrad project is entitle " Composition and diversity of medium and large terrestrial mammals in the tourist cocoa farm Yrerê, in Ilhéus, Bahia. The objective of this work is to evaluate the composition and diversity of mammals in an area of rural and cultural tourism, in order to inform the local population and tourists about the composition of the mammals in cocoa management areas of the Yrerê farm in Ilhéus, Bahia.
(2022 -2023) Supervisor of Milena Jesus dos Santos Undergrad in Biological Sciences at UESC. The title of the work is The influence of Highway BA-262 on the abundance of birds in the region of Ilhéus-Uruçuca Determine which group of small mammals (Rodents or marsupials) are more susceptible to being run over on Highway BA-262 – Ilhéus – Uruçuca . In order to carry out this study, the sampling of run over birds will be carried out on a 37km stretch of state highway BA-262, which connects the municipalities of Ilhéus and Uruçuca, through active search methods (walking along the highway and recording the birds run over ). The birds run over will be taxonomically identified and photographed individually for a second check of the species. Each bird run over will be registered locally through the geographic coordinate. Weather characteristics (sun, rain, cloudy, etc.) will also be noted, in addition to collecting the flow of vehicles on the highway through trap cameras (Umbrella Project).
(2022 -2023) Supervisor of Paula Thays Valencise Soares Undergrad in Biological Sciences at UESC. The monitoring of the run over fauna will be carried out during 5 days of every month, in the six-month period, always in the morning. The animals will be counted, and the geographic coordinates marked. Subsequently, the data will be spreadsheet and analyzed for the preparation of the results of the project.
(2020 - 2022) Supervisor of Doctorate student Rebeca F. Sampaio in the Ecology and Conservation Biology program at UESC. Anthropogenic disturbances, like fragmentation and habitat loss, especially in the Atlantic Forest, are the major problems for the biodiversity conservation, making changes in laMy research attempts to understand how the vegetation loss in shade cacao plantations - known as cabrucas - affects (i) the taxonomic diversity of non-flying small mammals; (ii) the pattern of movement and space using by two species of small mammals that interact strongly with cacao and forest (Marmosa murina and Rhipdomys mastacalis); and (iii) the genetic diversity of the cocoa predator rodent (Rhipdomys mastacalis).
(2020 - 2022) Supervisor of master student Julián Barillaro in the Ecology and Conservation Biology program at UESC. The Atlantic Forest is considered among the Brazilian biomes the most important and threatened in the world, due to the growing agricultural activity. Bats are known as bioindicators of pollution, as they provide a warning of adverse effects on ecosystems. We aim to evaluate whether there is bioaccumulation of heavy metals in Bats species in three different types of habitat (traditional cacao agroforests, intensified cacao agroforests and forest remnants) in the southern region of the State of Bahia, Brazil and determine the factors that influenced this bioaccumulation.
(2020 - 2022) Supervisor of master student Leticia Soto da Costa in the Ecology and Conservation Biology program at UESC. The Atlantic Forest is considered among the Brazilian biomes the most important and threatened in the world, due to the growing agricultural activity. Small mammals are known as bioindicators of pollution, as they provide a warning of adverse effects on ecosystems. We aim to evaluate whether there is bioaccumulation of heavy metals in small mammals (rodents and marsupials) in three different types of habitat (traditional cacao agroforests, intensified cacao agroforests and forest remnants) in the southern region of the State of Bahia, Brazil and determine the factors that influenced this bioaccumulation.
(2021 -2022) Supervisor of Vitória Ramos Undergrad in Biological Sciences at UESC. Cabruca regions, as well as several ecosystems, are directly influenced by anthropization, which consists of changes in the environment caused by human actions. Birds have important functions such as predation and seed dispersal and are among the groups of animals that suffer most from anthropic changes. Thus, the present project aimed to carry out a survey of the diversity and abundance of terrestrial bird species in the cabrucas of southern Bahia. The research method was centered on the use of trap cameras in the agroforestry of Ilhéus, Una and Belmonte. here we record 14 species of birds, only 4 species of terrestrial birds were recorded, the Jacuguaçu (Penelope obscura), Chicken (Gallus gallus), Socó-boi (Tigrisoma lineatum) and Biguá (Phalacrocorax brasilianus). Considering all birds, the most registered were the domestic rooster (G. gallus), the thrush (Turdus rufiventris), the Carcará (Caracara plancus), the Biguá (Phalacrocorax brasilianus) and the Socó-boi (Tigrisoma lineatum).
(2021 -2022) Supervisor of Aline Sandes Dórea Undergrad in Biological Sciences at UESC. The Atlantic Forest biome present in the state of Bahia has suffered devastation since the beginning of Portuguese colonization in Brazilian soils. Factors such as hunting and illegal trafficking, such as deforestation for livestock and agriculture, encouraged the fragmentation and consequent change of the natural landscape. Due to this, there is a reduction in local biodiversity, which can also change trophic relationships. However, in areas of the south of the state, a method of planting cocoa (Teobroma cacao) shaded by native trees, known as cabruca, was implemented. In this way, the present project aims to analyze the trophic composition of terrestrial mammals that inhabit areas of cabruca in the cities of Una, Belmonte and Ilhéus, through camera traps.
(2020 -2021) Supervisor of Gabriela Santos de Carvalho Undergrad in Biological Sciences at UESC. Frugivorous mammals play a very important role in an ecological system, being responsible for seed dispersal by territoriality, thus allowing the development of vegetation. The present research project aims to study the selectivity of small mammals in areas of the municipalities of Ilhéus, Una and Belmonte (inserted in the Atlantic Forest) using the cafeteria experiment methodology, providing a variety of seeds for animal choice. The cafeteria experiment will be complemented by the use of camera traps located next to the experiment sites, allowing the identification of the species of the individual involved.
The agroforestry cultivation system, locally known as cocoa-cabruca, consists of growing cocoa in the shade of native Atlantic Forest trees and directly assists in maintaining the conservation of these areas. Specifically, the southern region of Bahia has great diversity and wealth of fauna and flora and is considered one of the world's biodiversity hotspots. Small mammals perform several functions in the ecosystem, and the development of studies and methods for their conservation is very important. This community has shy behavior, and one method of studying them without needing capture is through the use of camera traps. Therefore, the present project aims to quantify and identify the species of small mammals present in the Atlantic Forest region in the municipalities of Una and Ilhéus, in southern Bahia, through camera traps.
